Wednesday 18th March ski *****sunny – Sommand/Praz de Lys
48.16 knots, 26.25 n. miles – 5 hours out.

We had such a good day yesterday we did it again but even earlier! We bought 4 hours again and were on the lift out by 9 and were the first people to ski down our favourite Pierre Rouge piste – that’s where I got my fastest time – 48.16 knots – probably the fastest I have ever been on skis. It was amazing and today’s weather was even more glorious than yesterday! No haze just an amazing view of the mountains and a deep blue cloudless sky:) We skied over into Praz de Lys and were absolutely amazed at how many pistes there are over there. In French tourist guide speak it was like finding another surprise layer in a box of chocolates! It went down the other side of the village, through many debutant areas and ended with the Le Planet area which is a really difficult drag lift – going off piste and literally dragging you over the end, up and over a flat rock edge to a small plateau from which 2 black runs went down to the bottom. The black on the left was actually like a steep red once you had negotiated the dodgy top. The one on the right was narrower and a bit more tricky. We went up to the top of the resort again and down the really hard red instead of the easy blue run by the lake. We then went back up again and took the black down back into Sommand. This piste was called Vellard and it certainly was well hard!!! It was fine at the top but soon turned to an icy steep nightmare – I managed it ok but Mag had a tough time, due to her short skis. Another girl was side slipping down so she joined her and when she felt the worst of the ice was behind her she started to do turns but hit a glossy piece of ice and was then sliding very fast down the piste on her right buttock!!! Luckily she didn’t spin round and go head first so she felt that was a bonus and that it was quite controlled in an ice flying everywhere from the edges of her skis kind of way!! She came to a halt eventually and managed to ski down to the bottom which went through a nice flat bit in the trees before plunging into another steep icy bit at the bottom! Still once we were down we headed back to our favourite Pierre Rouge slopes and stayed there until our time ran out. We stopped by a rock at the top of the lift overlooking our favourite Roc d’Enfer and slopes to eat our lunch. We headed down our last nice wide blue run to the van and packed up quickly. After dithering whether to move on or to stay we finally went down the mountain to the Super U in Taninges. We stopped every now and again to look at the rocky ravine we walked down the other day and made use of a handy water spout in the village of Messy (what a great address:)) and entertained the kids who thought it was very interesting to see us filling up our various bottles! After our shop we carried on up the Les Gets/Morzine road heading for the village of Gradon with the plan of walking to the chapel tomorrow - we saw it from the top of the lifts at St. Jean d’Aulp when we skied at La Chevrerie last week. We managed to find what we think is the right road and have parked up overlooking Montriond and the mountains beyond. Just below us a farm with 4 children and a dog were playing and having a great time. So we are parked on yet another side of the Roc d’Enfer which is a definite theme of this holiday. There are goldcrests in the pussy willow trees next to the van – they are fast becoming my favourite birds – easily identifiable with their yellow striped head. We have also decided this was probably our best day’s skiing ever, it had everything – wall to wall sunshine, great snow, not many people, great scenery, good pistes, tough pistes, surprise pistes we didn’t expect , fast speeds and terror – 3 blacks in one day – all in 4 hours for £20!! Highly recommended!
